Josie Dunn was the youngest of seven siblings from Oklahoma. Spoiled by her family--they used to say Baby Jo wasn’t worth a penny with a hole in it. Josie was picking cotton when she was recruited by the National Youth Association to work for the war effort out west. She was to be trained as a welder for the shipyards but water scared her. Instead, she went to Boeing as a bucker and then a riveter. At twenty years old, she made 62½¢ an hour with an extra 5¢ for swing shift. She never had any problems with the guys; the older women would help out and warn her about ‘left-handed screwdrivers.’ She continued to work at Boeing and retired after 50 plus years! In all, Josie sponsored a total of 100 friends and relatives out of poverty in Oklahoma to Washington State. She’s amazing! Josie was married to the love of her life, Clarence, for over 50 years. She still glows when describing him. “Clarence was a beautiful person”, she commented, not once, but numerous times during her interview.
